How to Make Your Decking Last Years Longer (Without Replacing It)

If you’ve got timber decking in your garden around Cwmbran, Newport or the surrounding areas, it’s worth keeping an eye on it before the main gardening season gets underway.
Decking is a great way to create a usable, level space, especially in gardens that slope or don’t get much sun. But like any timber, it does need a bit of maintenance to keep it in good condition.
We recently carried out a decking clean and treatment on a garden that sits in a more shaded, woodland setting. The boards had gone quite green and slippery, which is fairly common where there’s less direct sunlight and moisture tends to sit for longer. The structure itself was still solid, which is the important part, it just needed a proper clean and treatment to bring it back and make it safe to use again.
Why decking benefits from regular maintenance
In areas like Cwmbran and Newport, gardens often hold a bit more moisture, particularly where there’s shade from trees or surrounding fences.
Over time, that can lead to:
Surface algae (the green layer)
Slippery boards
Timber drying out and losing its finish
It’s all part of timber being a natural material, nothing unusual but it does mean it benefits from occasional care.
What a decking clean and treatment does
A proper clean and treatment isn’t just about how it looks, although that’s a nice bonus. It also:
Removes the slippery surface build-up
Helps protect the timber from ongoing moisture
Keeps the boards in better condition for longer
Makes the space safer and more usable
Once it’s been done, the difference is usually noticeable straight away.
Getting it ready for spring and summer
This time of year is ideal for giving decking some attention. After a damp winter, it’s common for surfaces to have built up a bit of algae or general grime, especially in shaded gardens. A clean and treatment now means:
It’s ready to use properly in warmer weather
It looks better going into the main garden season
You’re less likely to run into issues later on
Repair vs replacement
One of the main things we advise is not to assume decking needs replacing too quickly.
If the structure is still sound, you can often:
Replace the odd board if needed
Strengthen any weaker areas
Carry out a full clean and treatment
In many cases, that’s enough to get several more years out of it.
A quick check you can do
If you’re unsure what condition your decking is in, a quick look will usually tell you:
Is it slippery underfoot?
Are there any soft or damaged boards?
Does water sit on the surface after rain?
If it’s mainly surface issues, it’s usually very manageable.
A simple way to stay on top of it
One thing we’ve noticed over the years is that most garden issues don’t come from anything complicated, it’s usually just timing. Jobs get missed, or pushed back, and then everything seems to land at once.
A simple way to make this easier is just keeping a bit of a record of what’s happening in your garden when things were treated, when growth picked up, or when problems started to show. It doesn’t need to be anything formal, just enough to stop each season feeling like you’re starting from scratch again.
Alongside Ark, we’ve started putting together a few simple guides under a small sister project called Wild & Woven, focused on helping people feel a bit more organised and confident with their gardens.
There’s a free guide on keeping a garden journal, as well as a monthly gardening guide (we’ve just put one together for April), which covers what’s worth doing around the garden at this time of year.
There’s also a quiet WhatsApp group where people share what they’re working on, ask questions, and help each other out, nothing formal, just a useful space to dip into.
If any of that sounds helpful, you can find it here:
Final thought
Decking is a really practical addition to a garden and, looked after properly, it holds up well over time. Most of the time, it’s just a case of keeping on top of it rather than leaving it until bigger work is needed.
