Preparing Your Fence for the Winter

Updated: Dec 12, 2022

We have been lucky enough to experience some fairly mild weather for November this year, so there is still sometime to get those fences treated. We recommend that fencing treatment should be carried out every 1-2 years. We also recommend an oil based product which will penetrate the timber and 'feed' it, rather than your typical stain or paint that you often see advertised. An oil based product can work out a little bit more expensive to purchase, but it is definitely worth it in the long run.

Another job that we would advise on examining at this time of year is checking the stability of your fence. Are there any posts that should be replaced, or repairs to be made? It won't be long before the windy weather begins, which can put a strain on your fence and quickly make very obvious, any flaws in your structure which may need attention. It is much easier to prepare a fence for stormy weather than to try and put it back together afterwards!

Storm damage very often results in a brand new fence being required. The other thing is, if a storm is on the way and your fence is in need of some TLC you could also brace your fence temporarily. This can be achieved by fitting and propping timber from the middle or top rail of your fence down to the ground at an angle, If this can be done either side of your fence, it may help to hold things steady if needed. This is obviously a temporary solution. In the meantime it may then be possible to install additional fence posts so that you can get a few more years out of your fence.
